Android Tablets on Parade at Mobile World Congress 2010

CES 2010 had no shortage of Android tablets on display and the same is happening at Mobile World Congress 2010. Attached below are select videos found via YouTube and other sites being introduced by various manufactures. While some are protoypes, others are actually coming to market at some point in the near future. I’ll keep adding videos to this post as I find them. MORE »

If someone asked you to create your dream internet tablet, you might find that your ideal specs would line up closely to the upcoming $321 Notion Ink Adam. This little 0.6-inch thick (770 grams) beauty features a tri-mode Pixel Qi B&W e-paper reflective / basic color transflective / full color 10.1-inch touch LCD (oleophonic, anti-glare), NVIDIA Tegra chipset (1080p capable), 16 / 32GB SSD, SD card slot, Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, Android OS, and a battery life unheard of in the segment — 48 hours standby, 16 hours of web surfing over Wi-Fi, 8 hours of HD video playback. And if that wasn’t enough, Notion Ink has given the Adam an HDMI port, 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone, 3MP camera (rotates 180 degrees), proximity sensors, accelerometer, assisted GPS, digital compass, and built-in speakers. Video Demo: ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet + Media Dock in Action

Our buddy, Charbax, has posted a video demo of himself using the ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet in real world use cases. In the video below you’ll see Last.fm’s Android application running, Internet browsing, and 720p video playback (Xvid, MKV files) on the device, as well as on the ARCHOS media dock (aka DVR Station) connected to an HDTV controlled via a wireless mouse. All great stuff… and gets me thinking: this setup could replace a dedicated digital media adapter or even a budget HTPC, if ARCHOS threw in UPnP support (or maybe there’s an app for that?). MORE »

ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet

After much Internet chatter over the Summer, ARCHOS has finally released their 5-inch screen, Android powered ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet ($249.99 8GB — $439.99 500GB). The new OS is an evolution for the platform which combines ARCHOS’ video player expertise with Google’s seemingly more and more popular Android OS and its platform specific applications. Speaking of Android applications… ARCHOS 5 comes bundles with Deezer (Radio), Dailymotion (Video), Twidroid (Twitter), eBuddy IM, DroidIn (LinkedIn), QuickPedia (Wikipedia), ThinkFree (Office suite), and others — additional apps can be installed via AppsLib directly from the device. In addition, the device hardware-wise offers GPS (with 3D car nav. maps), Wi-Fi / Bluetooth connectivity, Micro SD slot (SDHC compatible), FM radio, and a HDMI TV dock (sold separately) for playing media content and even surfing the Net from the couch. SMiT MID-560 Android Powered Mobile Internet Device

Our friend Charbax of TechVideoBlog.com has posted a video from IFA of the SMiT MID-560 Mobile Internet Device (MID) powered by Google Android. The device is quite impressive. The MID-560 features mobile TV, GPS (+ car navigation), Wi-Fi, 3G, e-Book reader (txt, pdf), and support for Android Marketplace. The 5-inch (800×480) touchscreen device should be out Q4 2009 and sell for around $200-300. MORE »
Creative Zii EGG Development Kit Walkthrough
Anythingbutipod.com has posted a video and pics for all of us to inspect featuring the Creative Zii EGG Development Kit. While the product still looks a bit rough around the edges, it has tremendous potential. Check out our earlier post on the device. Personally, I’d like to see Creative open up the product even further than just its own Plaszma OS and support for Google Android. How cool would it be if other open source MID operating systems (example), today or in the future, could be loaded on to this device like we’re able to do with PCs?
Mystery Android MID Capturing People’s Attention

It’s hard to tell if this is an MID (Multimedia Internet Device) prototype or a finished product that may soon be coming to market. Whatever it is, it’s got the Net buzzing. The mystery MID is powered by a Rockchip CPU running Google Android and offers a 5-inch touchsceen, 3G / Wi-Fi connectivity, Google Talk, and MSN Messenger among other apps. I say: just add GPS (and possibly a front facing camera for video conferencing) and price it at or below $299 and you’ve got a winner. MORE »
Android MIPS Processor Port Now Open Source and Ready for Embedded Devices

MIPS Technology earlier this week released the source code to its Google Android port that allows the OS to work with the company’s 32-bit MIPS chips (MIPS @ COMPUTEX 2009) presently found in set-top boxes, digital TVs, mobile internet devices (MIDs), home media players and VoIP systems. So, get ready… low-cost Android powered devices running MIPS and ARM processors should be making a big splash by 2010. It’s amazing that a Linux-based OS designed for mobile handsets has evolved to such a degree. It will be interesting to see how the various device manufactures utilize Android in their products. I wonder if Google is planning on expanding their “Marketplace” to offer third-party apps designed for such devices? MORE »
