Video-On-Demand for PSP

sony psp lrgGamespot has more noise on the expanding role the Playstation Portable may have in the future. According to the article, when the PSP is released in South Korea in May, it will include a new piece of bundled software called the Network Utility UMD. With that running, users of the PSP will be able to:

Other networked services scheduled for PSP consumers in Korea include on-demand streaming music, on-demand streaming videos (including TV shows), e-learning options, and electronic books. SCEK and KT expect that they will be the first companies to provide a full online experience for the PSP user in any market.

It’s unclear from the article whether this service just streams content wirelessly for real-time viewing or if you’ll be able to save the result on a Memory Stick Duo card for later viewing. Assuming that you can save the results to the Duo card, this could be a great way to grab a few videos before hopping on a plane.

From my point of view, this seems like a better approach for video distribution than buying UMD discs of movies. I can’t really see the financial justification of buying a PSP UMD movie for the same price as a DVD, but only be able to watch it on a small PSP screen. On the other hand, having the ability to download a video for a reasonable fee of $5 to watch while travelling makes a great deal of sense.

Since VOD service provider MovieLink already has licensed content from Sony Pictures, it’s not a stretch to think that a service like Movielink would extend their service into the PSP. It’s even less of a stretch to think that since Sony is already dipping its corporate toe into downloadable movies, it might try the same approach for the PSP.

  1. I just posted a couple of cool music videos (Dizzee Rascal and M.I.A.) especially formatted for the PSP with instructions in

    case you need em

    Check them out at http://f.rivolo.us

You should check them out even if you haven’t got your PSP yet. They work fine with Quicktime.

I plan to post some full length movies for the PSP very soon but I will have to split them up or find a host other than Rapidshare that would allow for more than 30MB uploads.

If you know what you’re doing go ahead and download them. Else, please note the following:

    1. The Rapidshare page you are taken too when you click on the video links on the site is not for uploads only. Go to the bottom of the Rapidshare page and click on the button that says FREE. You’ll get a page with a timer at the bottom. Wait for the timer to go to 0 and you’ll see a link to the file to download.

    2. You have to buy a B-type USB cable if you don’t have one. Just take your PSP with you to any computer store (e.g. CompUSA,
BestBuy etc) and they’ll find you the right cable. It’s only $5 or so.

    3. Just make a new folder in the main directory named MP_ROOT and then make another folder (in MP_ROOT) named 100MNV01,
that’s where you’ll put all your videos in. So the folder where your videos will be is M:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01.

    4. If you need more instructions please see the instructions on the sidebar at http://f.rivolo.us

    5. I plan to write a simple batch file to overcome the 1-download/hour limit for rapidhsare.de
    OTA
