Sony PSP Browser Hack Explained

psp411 browser

For all you Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) aficionados, PSP 411 (via Gizmodo) has got the goods on how to hack the PSP to browse the Web. Although not natively supported, PSP 411 reader, ROTO, explains how he did some Wi-Fi packet sniffing with Wipeout Pure (a game that offers downloadable content) and figured out a way to surf the Web using PSP’s built-in HTML/JavaScript capable browser. The only catch: You need to manually enter the IP of a PSP friendly portal page (example), which can then link you to popular sites on the Net using spring-board links or a text input URL bar.

PSP browser functions (still being tested):
ROTO’s findings: “Browsing is simple enough, up and down to move from link to link. D-Pad only though. Also there is no cursor anywhere, and no title-bars. If there is no link in the nearest vicinity, the PSP just scrolls the page (awesome). Entering links is X, refresh page is []. Again entering text into boxes pops up the API.

JavaScript works (Again API for Alert boxes, NEAT feature), Java is yet to be tested. Frames don’t work. Large pictures are to be tested too. Uhm I think thats it for now. Most of HTML works (no H1’s and stuff). Background colors and pics etc work fine. I know I’m forgetting something so if you have questions, please ask.”

Side note: Joel and I are on the same page… someone needs to figure out a way to load Portable FireFox from a Sony memory card (it’s already being done with USB flash drives).
