Vonage F-1000 Wi-Fi Handset

vonage f-1000With VoIP becoming all the rage, Vonage wants to up its competitors by launching a Wi-Fi handset later this spring/summer that can place calls on any open wireless network at home or on the go, reports Engadget. For now details are still a little vague, but if they could just combine this handset with a cellular GSM phone to work double duty, they would really have a winner.

  1. Is anyone else doing Wi-fi VoIP with cell phones?

  2. I don’t think any of the carriers are offering VoIP with their cellphones (in the future perhaps), but Wi-Fi/GPRS enabled Pocket PC phones can work in dual mode when SKYPE is installed.

  3. Interesting update. I feel like I am always catching up… I was reading recently about how Philadelphia may be making the entire city a “hot-spot” … installing nodes everywhere. That certainly is a cool concept. Have you heard about this? I wonder if there would be a lot of interference, or if VoIP would flourish. What is your take?

  4. Personally I think cities/counties should blanket their areas with freely accessible Wi-Fi (many of the SF bay area libraries already off it). I look at Wi-Fi as commodity comparable to light made available through city lamp posts.

  5. I think that is a great idea. Personally, I would love to be able to take my laptop anywhere- to a park, a coffee house, and be able to use my internet and sunrocket voip. Philadelphia will be a a coveted city for bloggers. Just think of all those bloggers that sat with stale venti coffees and cold french fries during the conventions…. if only they could have been blogging anywhere they wanted!
