Meedio Reborn as MeediOS

meedio music screenshot[UPDATE] Like a phoenix rising from its ashes. Meedio, or should I say its underlying source code, has now become a GPL open source project hosted at SourceForge called MeediOS. The group explains: “MeediOS is the natural extension of the Meedio platform. Though Yahoo purchased the intellectual property (IP) of Meedio, LLC in 2006, they did not purchase the product. The MeediOS community is continuing to improve Meedio.” Right on! This is actually pretty exciting. Now with hundreds, if not thousands, of developers improving on the code all proprietary PVR/Media Center applications will now have a formidable competitor to deal with. Could MeediOS do to MCE what Firefox did to Internet Explorer? Hmm. Only time will tell.

Thanks for the tip, Jason Meudt!

UPDATE: I’m getting word — and the new description on the front page of the MeediOS Wiki seems to back it up (see original desc. above) — that the code MeediOS is using is NOT the underlying Meedio source code, but a rewrite inspired by Meedio that will support previously developed Meedio add-ins and function similarly to the original application.

Below is the NEW project description:

MeediOS is the natural extension of the Meedio platform. Though Yahoo purchased the intellectual property (IP) of Meedio, LLC in 2006, they did not purchase the product.

MeediOS is a community which is continuing to improve Meedio with plugins and documentation.

MeediOS is also a backup for MAID, the Meedio Add-In directory.

MeediOS is on top of it an open source project which leads Meedio into the future. It’s no hack, it’s a Meedio inspired rewrite.

Anyone else still confused? Probably. Anyways… good luck to them, but now I’m not sure if MeediOS will be as potent as I originally thought since they’re starting from the ground up.

While it is true that community behind MeediOS has been working hard to further expand Meedio’s functionality, it is in no way an open source program. Meedio, at its core is now property of Yahoo. BUT, MeediOS folks are still working hard to improve ALL aspects of this software using Meedios core and respecting the TOS of both Yahoo and Meedio.

  2. UFGrayMatter,

What you say is contradictory to what is posted on the MeediOS website. This may be symantics, but if what you say is true, MeediOS needs to change the wording on their website.

“MeediOS” or “Project MeediOS” refers to a new free OPENSOURCE project started by the community which aims to provide an excellent ALTERNATIVE to the closedsource Meedio.

This states in very plain English it is an OPEN SOURCE ALTERNATIVE aimed to replace to the closed source Meedio.

  3. Meedio came along after MediaBox ceased development. They asked if they could post on the MediaBox forums to promote their free software which was directly copying MediaBox and continuing its development.

myHTPC was to be a free Media Center as was MediaBox, but very quickly they became Meedio and started charging.

In comparison to MediaBox, myHTPC and Meedio was very basic and was a shame that MediaBox had to stop development otherwise things would look very different.

So its nice to see MeediOS bringing development back to the masses in its free form, the way that Meedio promised it would have been. Shame that the all mighty dollar corrupts some peoples values.

  4. Ive been inputting suggestions into the meedios project via this handle on there site.

To clarify Meedios is a open source project where they are starting from the ground up as stated above.

Because of code rights the team have to start from scratch with all gpl code.

They are also deeply researching the original meedio as everything for that program is fully configurable on xml text files.

So all they have to do is read the original xml file code and then improve on it for allot of stuff.

They are going to include all the original functionality of meedio 1.41 as they can but with improvements.

Also they are looking for new things that can make the app better and stronger than it ever was and want feedback from YOU the community on things.

As for meedios project being up there and stunning well its early to tell but it looking promising but with your community support with input and feedback I’m sure it’ll rival the likes of media portal etc in no time

Is there an installation package that an average user can test with to compare features of other PVR packages?
    Thanks
