HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Delayed Again Because of Blu-Ray?
Toshiba - along with other HD-DVD backers - is probably fuming over the latest news that AACS (Advanced Access Content System) specifications have been delayed yet again, according to Ars Technica. This time, however, the delay has come about due to BD+, an anti-piracy measure specific to Blu-ray. BD+ is an additional dynamic encryption scheme that lets the Blu-ray group change the encryption scheme at any point in time. The idea behind BD+ is to prevent a single crack from working on all Blu-ray discs. Once a crack is exposed, the group can change the encryption rendering the crack useless on future discs. It’s widely believed that BD+ was necessary to get most studios on board. AACS also has a method for dealing with cracks, but the Blu-ray members apparently didn’t feel it was enough. The delay could extend for a month, and possibly more. And the saga continues.
