PSP Location-Free TV and DVR Capabilities Coming Soon

Digital-Lifestyles reports that Sony will soon be converting the uber-popular PlayStation Portable (PSP) into a location-free TV viewing device with DVR capabilities. “Soon [you will] be able to deploy the device’s built-in WiFi, to watch video from home entertainment terminals, anytime, anywhere in the world,” stated Sony’s CEO Howard Stringer at Ceatec. Stringer further went on to say in his keynote that consumers can expect to see a high capacity (aka multi-gigabyte) MemoryStick designed for PSP that will be able to synchronize with a DVR. Now, why didn’t Microsoft think of doing all that with their Portable Media Center devices?

Technically you’ve already got something similar with a Pocket PC or Smartphone and Orb. Sure the PSP ups the cool factor a bit, but Orb is doing a great job of streaming live television and I have my doubts about Sony doing it better. Slingbox certainly hasn’t improved the concept.

Welcome Jake! I’ve been a big fan of your site. I highly recommend everyone to subscribe to his RSS feed. Anyways, you’re right about Orb having a similar solution, but it’s nice to see a company who actually developed the product introduce new, innovative features into their device — tight integration is always a good thing.

Fair enough - The news that Sony Vegas is supporting an option to save to PSP is far more compelling in some respects. There’s still not a perfect solution for pushing my own content to the PSP and saving directly from a video editor is a step in the right direction.
