This has nothing to do with the Applications issue…. The iPhone is a completely locked device. Both the device itself as well as the SIM card from AT&T are locked. Of course, hackers have broken these things, but if you don’t want to have to break it to “fix it” you are pretty much out of luck in enabling features that are quite common for phones today. MORE »

This was incredibly easy to figure out, but still something worth sharing as it substantially enhances the Amazon MP3 store experience if you manage your music on iTunes and sync with an iPod / iPhone. By default, the music will be added to iTunes, but this actually leaves a second copy in the Amazon MP3 folder outside of your iTunes Music folder. With a simple switch in prefs, you are all set. I just updated my Apple TV with the latest software to get access to YouTube and I have to say that the H.264 quality is excellent! We all know what the majority of YouTube video looks like, but this is something well beyond what you normally see and bodes very well for the iPhone when it’s released next week. MORE »

I ordered the Wireless Mighty Mouse [check prices] when it was announced on July 28th and I love it. I’ve used other wireless Bluetooth mice, but this is a keeper. It’s very simple (Apple style) and yet has a great deal of functionality baked in. The stealth second button is pressure sensitive and it magically just works when you click down on the right side. The scroll ball is very slick. Imagine a scroll wheel that clicks, spins and slides any direction you need it, plus provides another button for launching apps – the default is for Expose. MORE »

I believe that the name Boot Camp is a significant double entendre which references both the boot sequence of a computer (the dual boot) and also the beginning of something much more considerable — not unlike the boot camp attended by members of the armed forces. I don’t actually think or hope there’s much related between Apple and the military… Though you might look at this as training for the battle ahead. MORE »

I was just listening to the latest this WEEK in TECH podcast and found myself really thinking about John Dvorak’s final thought on the logical future of the PC. He feels – and I agree – it’s bound to be Linux on the server, OSX86 (Apple) running on the desktop with Microsoft controlling the office applications. MORE »
