Steve Jobs has already indicated that the iPhone is going to run a full version of the Mac OS; so it’s not completely illogical that iPhone will be ported to the Mac desktop / laptop platform. In fact, there is so much synergy and opportunity in doing so that it’s almost inconceivable to think that this isn’t going to happen at some point down the road. AOL to Give Everyone 5 Gigabytes of Dedicated Storage
AOL is launching their free services with a pretty impressive 5 Gigabytes of dedicated storage to anyone and everyone. Draft 802.11n Ratification Failed Key Vote; Could be Delayed Until Late 2007
Things are getting a bit complicated when it comes to getting the next generation of Wi-Fi gear approved and on the market. A key vote needed to ratify the draft 802.11n standard failed to reach the 75% approval required by the standards group (via PC Mag). Instead, the standard only received a 42% approval vote and caused several Wi-Fi chip manufactures to go on the defensive. ExtremeTech is predicting that the final standard may not be approved until September 2007. Further, the initial standard may not reach the required 75% approval mark until September this year. This initial approval is required in order to keep making progress towards reaching a finalized standard. MORE »
Internet Timer for Parental Control of Web Access
The Webguard programmable internet timer is a simple product that is long overdue (via Gizmodo). The main purpose of this interesting little gadget is to limit access to internet connectivity through a timer / meter. It works similar to a light timer that you place on your lamps when you travel. This is a pretty nice little box that should be a little more secure and reliable for parents trying to controls their kids internet usage. Any parent who has tried to stop their child from accessing the internet probably knows that resistance is futile. This device, however, hooks directly up to the main line internet connection and controls access to the physical ethernet jacks. This should help to avoid junior plugging directly into the cable modem to bypass any restrictions. MORE »
Key Net Neutrality Amendment Defeated
A key amendment in favor of Net Neutrality proposed by the Democrat Ed Markey from Delaware was defeated today by a vote of 34 to 22 (via CNET). The amendment had pretty strong language that outright made it illegal for ISPs to create a tiered internet to guaranteed preferential treatment for a fee. There were some provisions in the telecommunications bill that passed related to the issue of Net Neutrality. Specifically, the bill gives the FCC the right to investigate and govern over any violation of neutrality. MORE »
Does Apple’s 17-inch MacBook Pricing Strategy Provide Insight Into June Price Cuts?
Apple’s recent introduction of the 17-inch MacBook Pro caught more than a few bloggers and analysts off guard with its curious pricing options. It didn’t take long after the announcement for everyone to realize that when properly configured, it was actually possible to purchase a more advanced 17-inch MacBook Pro for $100 less than a similarly equipped 15-inch. While this might seem odd at first glance, I think it actually sheds some light on Apple’s longer term pricing strategy across the entire product lineup. MORE »
Sony’s ‘Location-Free’ Technology Will Finally be Available to Mac PCs
Place Shifting of content get’s another shot in the arm today with Sony’s announcement that they have licensed their Location Free technology to Kaga Electronics. Kaga has plans to port the technology for use on the Max OS X platform (via Extreme Tech). Mac users have few, if any, options currently to place shift content to their Macs. Sling Media’s website claim’s they will support the Mac platform in coming months, while Orb Networks also relies on the PC platform in order to place shift content. MORE »
Xbox Live May Soon Integrate Advertising to Subsidize Subscription Costs
It looks like Microsoft is set to acquire video game advertising company Massive Inc. for somewhere between $200 and $400 million. This acquisition makes a lot of sense as non-traditional advertising has been growing through the internet and in-game advertising for the past several years. The video game market is fast growing with in-game advertising becoming even more important as gamers spend significant captive time in front of their gaming consoles. MORE »
Vonage Inks Free WiFi Hotspot Deal in UK
Vonage UK just inked a new deal with WiFi hotspot provider The Cloud that will allow Vonage customers to make free VoIP calls in any of The Cloud’s 7000+ hotspots (via The Register). This is a pretty interesting development since it starts to bridge the gap between landline and mobile phones. The service will work with mobile handsets such as the UTStarcom F1000 available directly through Vonage. Users will not have to perform any additional login or authentication and will be online as soon they are within range of a hotspot. No additional surcharges or fees other than Vonage’s standard monthly charges apply. MORE »
Hybrid DVD to Contain Both HD DVD and Standard DVD Formats
For anyone concerned about creating a digital backup of their new HD DVD movies, Warner Home Video may have just the solution for you! Warner just announced that the industry’s first Hybrid DVD will be released on May 9th, 2006 and will contain the HD DVD version on one side of the disk with the standard definition DVD on the flip side. The feature film to receive this designation will be “Rumor Has It” staring Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner. So while you probably don’t have a HD DVD player to take advantage of the pure HD content, you can still do everything that you used to do with your old and outdated standard DVD’s with this edition.
