Simeda Pocketster - PocketPC Personal Server App
Simeda has developed and extremely cool and useful PocketPC application called the Pocketster, which lets anyone with a Wi-Fi enabled PocketPC turn their handheld into a personal server via an ad-hoc network and Rendezvous. What this means is that users will be able to easily transfer data files to and from their PocketPC to other networked devices, as well as stream MP3 music in real-time.
Creator’s suggested uses:
1. Personal advertising and matchmaking - Publish information about yourself (a picture, personal details, maybe a streaming recording of your voice - you name it!). You can also use it in corporate environments or at tradeshows (carry your “electronic business card” in your pocket and have people discover you and browse your “pocketable” web server for details)
2. Share your media collection with passers-by or look at theirs while sharing a ride on the bus. Pockster bundles a Macromedia Flash-based sound preview tool to allow you to also stream sound from other Pocketster users.
3. Carry your important presentations or other files in your pocket and have them instantly available on your wireless corporate network simply by browsing for your “pocketable” web server using Rendezvous (corporate network access is only available in the Pocketster Pro version which will be released in a few weeks).
According to Gizmodo, “Right now, the free version has been tested only on Windows Mobile 2003 devices (although it may work for Windows Mobile 2002), and messes around with some of the Pocket PC Zeroconf (zero configuration toll) settings to prevent your Pocket PC from trying to connect to your preferred network when Pocketster’s ad-hoc network is running. What I’m saying is, don’t mess around with this version of Pocketster unless you’re willing to potentially screw up (until you edit them back in) some of your wireless settings.
A soon-to-be-released version called ‘Pocketster Pro’ will allow you to join existing networks without creating an ad-hoc one (and without screwing up your settings) in a few weeks, presumably for pay (although Simeda doesn’t say for certain).”
