Keep the PC–I’ll Take TiVo
Dan Tynan, contributing editor at PC World, argues he would never trade in his TiVo for a PC with digital video recording (DVR) functionality. He states, “…most of us don’t want to manage content; we just want to watch it. I doubt that any Windows-based system will ever be as affordable, reliable, or simple to use as a comparable consumer electronics device.” We couldn’t agree more. There really is no better way (at present) of enjoying TV than having a stand-alone device, like a TiVo or ReplayTV, that are specifically designed and optimized for the sole purpose of watching, pausing, and recording live TV.
However new products are already coming down the pipeline like the thin-client PRISMIQ MediaPlayer/Recorder, a new type of non-hard drive based DVR that uses the home network to stream video feeds to a PC for storage and conversion, which also combines TiVo-like functionality. Or the Denon NS-S100 Multimedia Server, running Mediabolic’s M1 entertainment platform software, combines the power, storage, and media features of a PC but with the ease of use of a set-top box.
