Google TV Rolls Out Android 3.2

google tv logo1Google TV is now a part of Android Honeycomb 3.2.  A new update was released last week to allow Google TV to go Android in keeping with Google’s promise earlier this month to release frequent updates.  This is the latest update that will happen before Android 4 is provided to users.  The new software is currently for Sony devices only.

Google TV can now support acceleration on hardware.  It makes the apps more effective in appearance.  The feeds can also support live streaming via HTTP.  It will help certain types of videos, such as HTML5, to be streamed.  It also makes media streaming better because of the updated platform.

Google announced an update to the way Google TV identifies channels, making it easier for app developers to work with their own EPGs.  Chrome browser is also getting an uplift regarding Google TV.

At the moment there are only rumors with regards to the Android 4 platform. However, it seems likely that in the next year it will be available just like the new update Android 3.2.  For owners of Sony products such as tablets, it can be easier to take one’s home network on the road.  Any show you might be in the middle of at home can be taken with you on a Sony tablet device, as Google TV is setup for all internet portals.  Fans of Google TV are certainly going to gain in coming months, once the Android platform is announced.  There has already been an announcement that more apps will be available for the Android 3.2 version.

Any word on whether any or all of these updates will be available to logitech google tv owners?
I have both a sony tv with gtv, as well as tha logitech revue with google tv. I got the sony tv with gtv without knowing the little talked about fact that sony’s version can only be hooked up to a reciever that supports arc, audio return channel [a new audio protocol that is not compatible with my yamaha ymc-500 a/v media controller doesn’t support! I actually like things about each one better than the other, but logitech is not going to go any further with developiing gtv, and my guess was that sony will! I haven’t gotten any updates on my sony yet, and want to know if logitech will at least go to honeycomb 3.2?

The short answer is that we don’t know.

GigaOM thinks the answer is yes: http://gigaom.com/video/google-tv-honeycomb-32/

The long answer is that I would be suprised given that the Revue is dying product but they may decide to minimise potential brand damage by keeping it up to date with the competition. At least for a while. Logitech do seem to be behind the curve on updates though so it might be a wait.
