Samsung Unveils Its ‘Smart’ QWERTY TV Remote

Any TV remote with an integrated QWERTY keyboard has a better than good chance of failing in terms of overall design and usability. However, Samsung’s new $99.99 QWERTY TV Remote may surprise us all.

The QWERTY side of the remote has a decent little layout with very readable buttons and a clear LCD screen to what you’re typing without having to look up to see if what you’re entering on the TV screen is correct. The remote also has nifty mechanism that detects which side of the remote you have facing up and disables the buttons on the backside so you don’t press anything you didn’t want by accident. The remote’s wedge design also helps people orientate the device in their hand intuitively as well.

Samsung states the QWERTY TV Remote will come bundled with LED D8000 and D7000 Series and Plasma D8000 Series Smart TVs. It’s also compatible with LED D6300 Series models and up. No word if it’s programmable for use with other devices at this time. [via]

UPDATE: apparently the attached press photo doesn’t represent the remote well under real lighting conditions. Both the lettering and (especially) the LCD screen leave much to be desired in this new showfloor pic.
