Vodafone Webbox Brings the Internet to the TV

vodafone webbox

Hat tip to Vodafone for such a novel idea that can possibly change the lives of those living in emerging markets. The company has just announced a new keyboard PC that connects directly to a standard TV via RCA cables. The Internet connection is piped in over the air using a pre-paid mobile SIM card at 2.5G or EDGE speeds (yeah, not the greatest). No details on the OS, but it looks like it may be Android based. We do know, however, that Webbox will ship with Opera Mini, a browser capable of compressing web pages by 90%, and offer apps, photos, music, FM radio, SMS, e-mail / contact management, and gaming functionality. MSRP is €75 (about $100) and will go on sale next week in South Africa. [via]
