News Corp.’s ‘The Daily’ Is a Good of Example of What a Digital Magazine / Newspaper Should Be

Before I get started, the thought occured to me that the term Digital Newspaper isn’t quite apt for an app like The Daily. If anything… The Daily is more of Digital Magazine with daily reportage, editorials, and supplementary photo, video, and audio content. However, the team has saw fit to just call it a “Digital Publication” (a neutral enough term). As you’ll see below, The Daily provides users a unique experience beyond the typical scanned page images of a Digital Magazine (examples) or the web app layout of a Digital Newspaper (see: NYTimes for Chrome). The iPad app provides categorized content, like News, Gossip, Opinion, Arts & Life, and interactive and local content targeted to the user (press release). Yes, I said interactive — a feature promised by Digital Magazine producers before the iPad went public, but most have failed to deliver. Interactive and unique rich media content is what, in my opinion, makes an app like The Daily worth paying a premium for in the form of a subscription. I have to say… I’m actually impressed — dig the UI’s carousel, media browser, transitions, and social features. What’s your take?
