LG Smart TV and Smart TV Upgrader Demo at CES 2011

LG in April will be releasing their first “Smart TV” to the market. The network enabled HDTV features a Nintendo Wii-like “Magic Remote” (powered by Hillcrest Labs’ Freespace and Broadcom’s BCM20730 chipset), DLNA support, 150 TV Apps (free and premium – i.e. Netflix, Hulu Plus, VUDU, etc.), and a web browser. Worth noting is that the Smart TV interface overlays live TV so users don’t have to switch video inputs as you would if you were using an attached Apple TV device, for example. The LG rep. also mentions (see 3rd video) that users will be able to stream and playback local network content on the TV, but users can also pick up where they’ve left off when they leave the home. No doubt LG’s Media Link, which is powered by PLEX, is behind the magic. FYI, the Smart TV Upgrader uses a standard remote and does not overlay live TV.
