AirFlick Takes a Cue from ‘Play To’

airflick demoTUAW’s Erica Sadun is up to her AirPlay hacking again. She now has a new Mac OS X app called AirFlick that zaps media content on your computer to an Apple TV for playback (requires that the format be supported by the device). As you’ll see in the video demo below, AirFlick works similar to ‘Play To’ on Windows. However, with this AirPlay implementation you’re limited to only sending content to an Apple TV as your receiver. Play To, on the other hand, works with just about any DLNA-enabled receiver like your Xbox 360, WD TV Live media streamer, or network digital photo frame. Comparisons aside, AirFlick is a neat little app with file drag-and-drop capabilities. I just wish Erica would consider going the donation-ware route with her apps instead of embedding banners.

Quick update… Erica has managed to get a DVD movie to playback on her Apple TV — I’m sure Steve Jobs is thrilled. It’s not as easy as drag-and-drop, as it requires use of the terminal and VLC to get things working. Still cool, nonetheless.
