Roku Pulls the Plug on the PlayOn Channel

roku playon demo1

I thought it was odd that the only video I found on YouTube demonstrating PlayOn on Roku was taken down the day we put it up. So I did a little research… it turns out Roku has pulled the plug on the PlayOn Channel, according to PlayOn staff on the company’s forum (excerpts below). “The channel” was actually a creation of a third party not affiliated with the company but that didn’t stop PlayOn from publicly promoting it and listing the Roku Player as a supported device. My guess Roku’s content partners weren’t too thrilled about seeing the PlayOn hack making its way to the device. FYI, if you were one of the lucky few to get the PlayOn Channel working, it’s said that it will continue to work, though it won’t be getting any future updates.

Hey gang,

We were contacted today by Roku and told that they were going to disallow this channel. While we are very dissapaointed by this there is not much we can do. Neither the Roku channel developer nor Roku are affiliated with PlayOn and we have no control over the situation. We were very excited about the Roku channel and excited to promote it to our customers…it was a cool feature that we thought many of our customers would really like. We don’t understand why Roku would feel a need to remove a channel that was benefiting so many of you.

It is our understanding that Roku has a 30 day return policy, so if you’ve just purchased a Roku for PlayOn you can hopefully get a refund from them. We will continue to try to find ways to support this device.

Sorry for the bad news.

Best,
Jim [PlayOn Staff]

It’s possible that if you’ve already gotten the channel installed it will continue to work. Not sure yet, we’ll test it this weekend after the dust has settled and then see. I’m not a Roku owner, so not sure how it deals with channels once they are added.

Just for the record, PlayOn did not “make it a channel”, it was developed entirely by a 3rd party. We thought it was really cool and so we promoted it. We had no reason to believe that it would be disallowed.

If you purchased PlayOn since Friday for use on the Roku and it no longer works on your Roku we’ll make it right. Give us a few days to figure out the best process for handling it.

Best,
Jim [PlayOn Staff]

Yes… if you have either of the PlayOn channels installed already, the Roku will keep it in your list. It wont be able to be updated though. I have both installed and they are still there. I have a bud over there that says they will remain. They are not alowing anybody to install PlayOn after 5pm tonight. So if you already have it your good… for now anyway…

The thing with content providers allowing/disallowing on certain platforms is getting OLD. They should understand this gives me eye balls to see your content. There’s some shows I would have never watched on TV if it wasn’t for PlayOn, Boxee, Hulu and others.
