TV Guide’s New iPad App Brings What You’d Expect, Plus Social TV Features

Earlier this week TV Guide announced their first, new iPad app. Features include: TV show listings, breaking news, scoops, show recaps, a hot list of what to watch, and sponsored full-length episodes. Basically, what you’d expect from a TV Guide produced app. However, what was a bit unexpected is that they’re also dipping their toes in the Social TV space by including share buttons that will inform friends and family on Facebook and Twitter of what you’re watching and when. While it doesn’t offer the ability to update one’s status with commentary on a show being watched, it’s most likely coming soon.

Showtime on Board as Exclusive Programming Launch Sponsor

NEW YORK–August 16, 2010 TV Guide Digital, with over 1.3 million iPhone app installations, announced today that its TV Guide App for iPad, sponsored exclusively by Showtime and featuring social TV listings, entertainment news, and TVGuide.com’s signature Fall TV Preview coverage, is now available on the App Store.

With Facebook and Twitter share buttons integrated directly within the listings grid for the first time, TV Guide App users will have the unique ability to share plans to watch their favorite shows via their social networks.

“Our iPad app makes it easier than ever for entertainment fans to share what they’re watching – and when it’s on – with their friends,” said Christy Tanner, General Manager, TV Guide Digital. “We’re delighted that Showtime is on board with us to launch this ideal second-screen entertainment companion, helping make this the best Fall TV season yet.”

Showtime will be the first network to run a full-length episode in the TVGuide.com iPad app with their new show, “The Big C,” starring Laura Linney. The full episode is featured within the Fall Preview section of the app, along with interviews and preview videos for new and returning shows. The TV Guide app also will allow users to keep lists of their favorite TV channels and shows on their iPad. Users can browse listings by time to see what’s on now or up to 14 days in advance, or can search by show name, cast member, episode title and episode or program description. The app also features breaking entertainment news, a day-by-day primetime schedule, photo galleries and original videos from TVGuide.com.

The TV Guide App for iPad, developed in collaboration with Roundbox Inc., is available for free for iPad on the App Store or from www.iTunes.com/AppStore/.
