Adobe Shows Off Why Flash Is Great for Google TV

I’m trying to figure out why I should be excited here. Adobe TV produced a video showcasing Flash running on Google TV and how the experience is just as good as it is on the PC. The only problem… the examples provided are standard websites which integrate Flash. Sorry, but the Google TV experience I’m hoping to get is TV-optimized web apps or Android apps that look great on the TV screen (either HTML5, Java, Flash-based… doesn’t matter, really) — not bring the web exactly as it is on the PC to the TV (that should be a last resort). Another thing that occurred to me, if Adobe isn’t working on this already, the Flash player on your TV should be able to be managed using your remote. For example, I should be able to hit rewind on my remote and have the Flash player’s video rewind. Another button on the remote should let me go fullscreen and back. You get the idea, right? Currently, it looks like one needs to manipulate the cursor across the screen to select the actions you want, ugh (note: the YouTube Leanback HTML5 web app can kind of do what I’m saying using a keyboard’s directional arrows). Guys, please tell me Apple is not going to school the industry again with their rumored, new app supporting Apple TV (aka iTV) in the next few months.
Aside: After I finished writing this post — inspired by ZDNet’s blog post on the topic — I found out that the video shown here was created in May 2010. Lets hope things have progressed since then, though it doesn’t sound like much new was unveiled for Google TV at the Android Flash Summit this week in SF.
UPDATE: found some new video from this week’s event (Yup, Flash on Google TV still doesn’t do much more. Where are the TV optimized apps?)
