Concept Chrome OS Tablet UI Mockups Provide a Window to the Future

It appears that Chromium OS developers have begun laying the groundwork on a custom Tablet UI layer for Chrome OS. While things are just in the “visual exploration” phase, the mockups give us a sneak peek at what a future Google Tablet may look like — and I’ve got say… it looks pretty darn cool. In fact, some of the proposed features are so fresh that they’re difficult to describe. Quoted below is the developer’s explanation of what you’re looking at in the attached concept video, as well as the UI mockup renderings included below.
And since Chrome OS supports Flash (unlike the Apple iPad), we may actually see digital magazines like this one below from Sports Illustrated.
This page contains visual explorations of how a Chrome OS tablet UI might look in hardware. Some possibilites they explore include:
- Keyboard interaction with the screen: anchored, split, attached to focus.
- Launchers as an overlay, providing touch or search as means to access web sites.
- Contextual actions triggered via dwell.
- Zooming UI for multiple tabs
- Tabs presented along the side of the screen (see Side tabs)
- Creating multiple browsers on screen using a launcher
