Roku’s Chuck Seiber Talks Up ‘Channel Store’

While watching Roku’s Chuck Seiber talk about the upcoming Channel Store and its “open” platform at NewTeeVee LIVE, it started sounding like Roku has some major plans for the Roku Player not too dissimilar to Boxee. Unlike Boxee, however, Roku is firmly set on selling its hardware product and not licensing the software frontend to CE manufactures.
The new Roku SDK will, according to Seiber, be open to anyone as long as they’re not a publisher of adult content. Developers will be able to create custom video channels and even infotainment widgets. Interestingly, Roku plans on keeping video channel layouts consistent with their UI guidelines, which are designed to be easily navigated with the product’s 9 button remote. The idea here is to keep things simple and provide users with content channels that look great on any size TV.
