Fonera 2.0n Router / NAS / Media Server

fonera 2 0n

It’s been a while since we’ve talked about FON and its Fonera routers. Luckily, a couple of recent video clips of the Fonera 2.0n in action has prompted me to revisit the current offering.

For those unfamiliar, the FON Wi-Fi network consists of routers purchased by users like me an you who share their broadband connection for free with members and optionally for a fee to the public. Attached below is a Google Map showing active nodes in my area covering San Mateo, Belmont, Redwood Shores, and San Carlos (about 14 total, with only one sharing). As you can see, sharing, unlike in Europe and other parts of the world, is not a big draw to user on the San Francisco Peninsula who are most likely subscribers on the restrictive Comcast network.

So why would anyone want one of these routers?

The answer is the router itself and what it provides. The latest Fonera 2.0n router is the most compelling device the company has delievered to date. It launched in the US on September 23, 2009 and retails for $99 [PDF - press release]. The Fonera 2.0n as the name suggests includes 802.11n Wi-Fi, 4 x Ethernet ports, 1 x USB host port (compatible with webcams, printers, external USB hard drives), offers 3G to Wi-Fi support, and provides a multi-function browser-based “dashboard” app that can be accessed on your home network or from a remote location with dynamic DNS. Additional details and plugins here.
