Access Hulu from Outside the USA with Hotspot Shield

[UPDATE] We’ve reported on VPN workarounds before to access sites like Hulu who only serve their regional viewership (USA). Unfortunately, the vast majority of these VPN services charge a monthly fee to let you pass data through their servers and gain a US-based IP to fool the online providers. Well, it turns out a highly rated VPN service called Hotspot Shied by AnchorFree Inc. doesn’t charge a penny, but may subject you to ads through its Mac / Windows desktop client. So, if you’re looking for a way to tap US-only online services or just wish to protect your Internet surfing using an encrypted VPN, take Hotspot Shield for a spin.

Anyone recommend a similar free service for us in the US who wish to tap content from the UK?

UPDATE: It looks like Hulu has caught on to Hotspot Shield and has blocked access from their servers. Check my comments below (see #4) for alternative methods to access Hulu from outside the USA.

Alexander – great find. Any way for us to make this happen for British content that’s not available in the US?

This solution has worked great, but now Hulu is detecting the use of the IP anonimizer and is blocking access. Any suggestions on getting around this?

Now HULU does detect Hotspot shield and the like… not useful anymore

Not good. Those guys at Hulu are smart. Plus, it probably didn’t help that Hotspot Shield got so much publicity lately. My suggestion: find a relatively unknown VPN provider or use a service that you can reserve a dedicated US-based IP (best solution). Unfortunately, you guys will most likely will have to pay for the service.

Another option: pay for a cheap, shared web hosting account in the USA and create a proxy tunnel your home PC can use to access Hulu. Example of what I’m talking about here and here.
