La Fonera 2.0 Wi-Fi Router Does It All and Pays You Cash
The team at FON are getting dangerously close to releasing the La Fonera 2.0 Wi-Fi router to a community beyond developers. The La Fonera 2.0 is no average router taking on many tasks normally handled by your computer. In the YouTube video above Martin Varsavsky, The CEO of FON, gives us a demo of many of the new 2.0 tricks. [via]
Aside from the traditional features found in a router this device also adds:
- File Sharing: using the Fonera 2.0 Beta GUI
- Printer Server: for USB printers to be shared as a Network Printer
- Scanner Server: for USB Scanners also to be shared
- USB Webcam: you can see your USB Webcam from any computer connected wired or wirelessly to the Fonera 2.0 Beta (only some chipsets supported)
- Plug In Interface: this is where new apps will be able to be loaded just with one click
On top of these, members of the FON community also get a few special perks. As a member you can access any of over 300,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the world for free (lifetime membership is $38.95). Outside of the free web access, members can also make money from their router by sharing a secure 2nd Wi-Fi channel with non-members.
The La Fonera 2.0 is expected to retail for $78. The La Fonera and La Fonera+ are available today.
