Sneak Peek: Netgear EVA9000 Digital Entertainer Elite

I can just see the marketing folks at Netgear screaming: “Nooooooo.” Unfortunately, for Netgear their EVA9000 FCC filing documents have been compromised (in other words: they have been discovered and made public without their consent) and are now making the rounds around the Internet. I guess I won’t have to sign an NDA for Netgear’s December 9th pre-CES private unveiling in San Francisco. In any case, the beans have been spilt on the Netgear EVA9000 Digital Entertainer Elite and the mess sure looks nice. Highlights: the beefed up media streamer now offers an internal SATA 3.5-inch hard drive slot (for local storage and progressive video downloads), 802.11n wireless, 40Mbps bit rate support for 1080p HD video playback, UPnP A/V, and media format support superior to Apple TV, Media Center Extender, or the Xbox 360 (comparison chart below). Lets just say it’s going to be a force to be reckoned with and a soon to be favorite of online content providers everywhere. [via / via]

This would be a great solution for customer installers, if it can be intergrated. If we could use this instead of having to invest into a Escient box for pushing around movie files, I would be interested. It would probably be a lot cheaper.

It is possible under the Current EVA8000 to do this though not as described in the documentation. It is very simple actually. You would need to route your audio out through speakers external to the TV and then use the html access to control the EVA8000/EVA9000. Alternatively others, check the Netgear forum, have enabled the EVA8000 to controlled through some of the available intelligent remote controls or using Windows on their phone. With the EVA8000 there is of course no local storage which accesses the files on your NAS or PC.

I often wonder whether this can do further UPnP tricks like being controlled by an external UPnP AV Control Point (play audio without needing the TV to be on) or serving contents on the hard disk to the network using UPnP AV MediaServer functionality.
