VidaBox Intros the Ultra-Compact PicoPC Designed to Add Connectivity Any TV

At first glance, the VidaBox PicoPC with Windows XP embedded looks like a interesting and desirable product until you find out that the company wants $929 for it. What you get:

  • A mini 1.25-inch thick PC that weighs less than 14oz. and has no moving parts (in other words silent)
  • Optional 16GB of built-in solid state storage
  • RS-232 / serial port for automation tasks
  • Ethernet port
  • (2) USB 2.0 ports that can be used for external storage, reading thumb drives with media content, or adding peripherals
  • Mic-in & L/R audio out
  • Write-protection that safeguards the device from viruses and malware – activated by resetting the unit
  • Pre-installed productivity apps for office and browsing duties
  • 30-foot range wireless keyboard with trackball
  • “VGA output for HD video quality” (not quite sure how “HD” this unit is supposed to get)

As you can see from the specs, the PicoPC is an extremely modest device for its asking price. With that said, though, the PicoPC may still find a place in people’s home who’ve grown accustomed to XP, and its many compatible applications, and want to bring the PC experience to their TV in a painless manner (you might want to check out some of the suggested alternatives below). Heck, VidaBox even recommends attaching the PicoPC to your TV with Velco, after making the necessary cable connections, for stealth placement.

Small to thin client PC-to-TV alternatives: ASUS Eee Box ($269), CherryPal ($249), Linutop ($440), ZvBox ($499)
