Sneak Peek: $99 PoD Box from Verismo – Watch Internet Video Directly on Your TV without a PC
Whoa, Momma…. I haven’t seen anything this exciting for quite some time. A little known Bangalore-based company called Verismo Networks is getting set to drop a $99 video player bomb that’s going to shake up the industry. According to CTO and co-founder, Vijay Maheshwari, the PoD is a thin client device (about the size of a small router) that’s capable of, get this, downloading DRM wrapped content from sources like Amazon Unbox, CinemaNow and is able to stream high-quality H.264 video from YouTube (one of its initial partners who will be promoting the box) and even download content via BitTorrent (requires an external USB storage device). The PoD is powered by the vTap search engine, which will allow users to scour what’s available on the Net via a simple search query (Guess what? Hulu.com content comes up. Oh, yeah!). The interface is very reminiscent of the Apple TV and appears to be quite snappy. I wish there were more details available, but from what Maheshwari is hinting at in the video, the PoD appears to be able to playback a variety of media codecs and will have some big-name launch partners (including some subscription services) when it comes out later this Summer. And in case you were wondering? It includes HDMI out (Bam!). [via]
