Zatz Not Funny Unboxes the Netflix Player by Roku

My, my how opinions have changed at Zatz Not Funny and other news outlets on dedicated set-top boxes from online content providers. From yet another set-top box… after the Blockbuster revelation, to “we’re heading in the right direction” with the Netflix Player by Roku. I can’t blame Dave, though. I think we’ve all reached the threshold for the number of set-tops boxes a consumer is willing to have in their A/V rack (Jeremy Toeman has a take on this as well). However, as I previously mentioned, a stand-alone device that’s bundled with your video subscription service (like your cable box) is an excellent way to go, especially if it’s a book sized, PC-free device that anyone can setup in minutes. But if a company like Netflix wants to produce a relatively inexpensive box for $100 or less, that doesn’t seem like a bad deal either. I also wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing the streaming technologies from Blockbuster (when it comes out) and Netflix (who already has a “instant streaming ready” logo) being integrated into networkable DVD players and digital media adapters in the near future. In any case, Dave has a gallery of photos from his unboxing and screenshots of the Netflix Player setup process.
