Netflix to Charge a “Premium” for Blu-ray Disc Rentals
According to MarketWatch, Netflix’s CEO, Reed Hastings, stated in a conference call on Monday that “purchasing Blu-ray DVDs costs more, both at retail and wholesale, than standard definition DVDs. Consumers are used to paying more for high-definition content….” As such, Netflix is planning on charging a “modest monthly premium” to its normal subscription price on Blu-ray discs later this year to defray the cost. No word on how much the increase will be, but it’s obviously good news for investors and bad news for subscribers. [via]
In related news… Netflix is saying that they now have three additional hardware partners, in addition to LG’s upcoming set-top, that will be able to deliver movies from the web to subscribers TVs. Expected release time frame: Q4 of 2008 (possibly earlier).
