Bring SlimServer Music Streaming to Windows Media Center with mceSoftsqueeze

mceSoftsqueeze Screenshot

While still in its early stages, mceSoftsqueeze, provides an interesting alternative for streaming music around the home. As many Squeezebox owners have know for some time, the Squeezebox is an excellent stream and sync solution for whole home audio – and so is its free PC software client cousin, Softsqueeze (available for Windows/Mac/Linux ) – when powered by its PC server application, SlimServer (aka SoftCenter, aka Squeeze Center). Enter mceSoftsqueeze… a Windows XP/Vista Media Center add-in that, in essence, functions similarly to Softsqueeze as a virtual Sqeezebox that logs into SlimServer (preferably installed on a separate networked PC) which can be managed directly from your Media Center’s 10-foot interface and remote in, say, your living room, bedroom, or den. The only catch, however, is that the add-in is not yet mature enough to also work in conjunction with Media Center Extenders (hopefully that will soon change).

Tip: You don’t have to own a Squeezebox to make use of this add-in. Download a copy SlimServer (available for Windows/Mac/Linux – supports: MP3, AAC, WMA, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, WAV) from Slim Devices (cost: $0), configure the software, and then install mceSoftsqueeze to access your music collection via Media Center.
