OmWave OmServer

There’s been a lot a buzz around the gorgeously designed Omaura PC enclosures and OmWave is smart enough to capitalize on that to release a Windows Home Server wrapped in the smoking hot case called OmServer. The only bummer is I wished they picked the version with the too-hot-to-handle built-in, retractable 12-inch touch screen (see video below) that the company looks like they’ll be implementing in an upcoming Vista Media Center PC (I’m gathering that from this image on this page). Seems like it would be a better option in OmServer than with a PC that’s already hooked up to your TV. But don’t fret, the OmServer on its own is still quite the powerhouse capable of being equipped with 4 hard disk drives for 4TB of storage and offering a 2GHz Celeron processor with 1GB of memory. Starting price: 960€ (as described 1,580€ or about $2,496 USD). MORE »

Banshee Music Player for Linux Adds Video Playback Support

Banshee 1.0 Alpha Video Library

Lookout, Miro. Banshee is adding video support to its list of features. According to the v1.0 Alpha 2 release notes, Banshee’s video library function provides “searching, playlists, smart playlists, queuing, and even bookmarks.” What’s more, music and video content is clearly defined and separated in the UI so users won’t see content mixed together while browsing or searching. The only logical thing missing (I think) is an online video subscription feature like its subscribe to podcast function. Note: people interested in trying out this Alpha release should know that this a development version and does not provide “feature parity” with mainline packages.

Amahi LogoAll I can say is… it’s a commendable start for an open-source software distribution. The newly found Amahi project (built on top of Fedora Core 8) offers hard drive disk space monitoring, a private wiki, network PC drive backups and file sharing, Vista calendar / iCal / Outlook integration, a custom web browser search extension for IE and Firefox (very cool), plugin extension support (currently available: browser-based photo slideshow, food recipe recorder, BitTorrent downloader), print server, dynamic DNS configuration for remote access, and simple network setup to name a few. Netflix spokesman, Steve Swasey, tells Reuters that nothing has been set in stone, but that the company is exploring opportunities for delivering movies to subscribers “in as many ways as possible.” (Enough with the talk already!
