Xbox Media Center Version .1 Released for Mac OS X

xbmc screenshotOriginally intended as a project to bring strong multimedia type capability to the Xbox, Xbox Media Center has now fluttered off into supporting other operating systems along with the native Xbox. For a while, the Linux Port has been around but now a new release of XBMC has been made available for Mac OS X.

For those unsatisfied with Apple’s FrontRow software, an XBMC download is available for Mac OS X. The release, however, is way low on the development ladder hence why the release is stamped “.1″ Nevertheless, it’s an interesting development in XBMC’s ever increasing compatibility range.

While the program is simple to install with a drag and drop to the application folder, the average user accustomed to Mac OSX’s predictability should probably step away. Nevertheless, some notable changes with the release include ffmpeg libraries updated “to the bleeding edge,” fullscreen support and proper frame rate tracking have been added. Given that XBMC’s stability is often an issue with various platforms, “hardly any problems” is likely a very subjective statement given that the author is a developer.

Despite its potential issues, XBMC is a free alternative to other media software (or none at all, as in the Xbox’s case). While the early release of the OS X version may not be very refined yet, it’s still an interesting development in the whole XBMC project. If you’re interested, you can even keep the project fueled by making a donation. Either way, make sure to stay tuned as the team hopefully smoothes out the edges on their Mac OS X version.

Wow, this is big news. XBMC for my modified XBox is excellent. It plays all kinds of videos (even QuickTime movies with the Sorenson codec), handles .ISO files of DVDs, can capture from SHOUTcast servers, plays YouTube videos and more. I was hoping for a PS3 version, but maybe they will have a Linux version that will run on the PS3.

I would like to see a video as well. I used XBMC for a while on my Xbox and like a lot of people had hoped that it would be ported over to some other OSs and devices. Perhaps this is the beginning of just such a trend.

I really wish someone would post up an action video of this OSXBMC. I'm all for using buggy software, but I'd like to see a video walkthrough here to see what I'm getting into.
