Recorded TV Manager Brings Windows Home Server and MCE Closer Together

whs recorded tv managerIf there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to never assume anything. For instance, don’t assume that because the same company built two products that they’ll work well together. This is doubly true when speaking about Microsoft. Specifically, Windows Home Server and Windows Media Center. Syncing recorded content between the two has required extensive configuration work that just doesn’t seem worth it. Well, according to Philip Churchill at Windows Home Server blog, a new add-in called Recorded TV Manager aims to simplify this process (via Ian Dixon).

What exactly does this add-in do? For $24.95, this is what you get:

  • Collections – collect series episodes automatically to the Home Server (or other location) and then watch them in original broadcast order on any Media Center on your network
  • AutoMove – automagically move all new recordings on a specific MCE system
  • AutoDelete – automagically delete duplicate recordings and previously watched episdoes
  • Runs 24/7 on Home Server

This is certainly a step in the right direction. I can live with having full PCs in every room and I can even live with having to put a TV tuner into each one. Setting up WHS as a repository for recorded television programs is easy enough. I would like some sort of plug-in or system that allowed WHS to update MCE guides about what other MCE machines on the network already have scheduled to record that so that you do not have duplicate reocordings in the first place.
