One of the most under-the-radar products at CES 2008, that should have garnered more attention than it did, is the forthcoming iRiver UNIT 2. Take a look at the following capabilities of this uber-gadget and tell me you wouldn’t want one as part of your connected home.

Direct from iRiver:

iriver now offers the ultimate all-in-one solution for integrating your personal digital content such as music, photos and movies with your TV and set-top box — the new UNIT 2 Multimedia Home Networking device. UNIT 2 features a sleek, minimalist design that enhances any interior. It comes with a Base Unit, Portable Unit, Remote Unit.

UNIT 2’s advanced multimedia, phone and web functionality includes: Audio, Video, DVD player, DiVX player, CD player, FM Tuner, VoIP phone, VoIP Video Phone, SMS/MMS, Web Browsing, Web Mail. Its 7” touch screen interface makes navigation easy and the built-in high-quality stereo speakers produce every nuance of your favorite music and video entertainment. UNIT 2’s communication features include Wi-Fi, a Built-in Mic and Wireless AP. Storage capabilities include both a 30BG hard disc drive and 2GB of NAND Flash.

DVICE states:

The front LCD pops off to become a portable media player with a 7-inch screen and a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels (pretty good), which kind of makes the stereo unit more of a rocking docking station. [...] you also get integrated Wi-Fi, Internet radio, streaming and download services.

UPDATE: Engadget just uploaded the following video of the UNIT 2 at CES.
