Apple Files Patent for Mac Genuine Advantage-Like Protection Mechanism
Known by the trademark office as “Run-time Code Injection to Perform Checks,” Apple is following similar steps taken by Microsoft and TiVo to protect its IP from pirates but also to stop the unauthorized use of its operating system on non-sanctioned hardware. According to ZDNet, Apple wants to include a “transparent to the user and difficult to circumvent” cryptographic key tied to a Mac’s hardware configuration that will make it necessary for OS X to operate. In other words, virtualization of OS X on x86 PCs are out, generic Hackintosh boxes are out, but Apple support calls for OS X reactivation is in after modifying one’s computer hardware setup.
