Wal-Mart Selling $198 Linux Desktop PC to the Masses

Everex has begun selling a modest little desktop PC under the Wal-Mart umbrella, based on a derivative of Ubuntu 7.10 according to DesktopLinux.com, called the gPC, which features an energy sipping 1.5GHz VIA C7-D processor, 512MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, 10/100 Ethernet, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. In addition, Everex pre-loads all gPCs with OpenOffice, Google Apps, Skype, iPod compatibility software, QEMU virtualization software, and more (bonus: free software updates for life). Of course, if the gOS is not to your liking, one can always replace it for another Linux distro of their choice – i.e. OpenSUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu.

The second item in its favor is its gOS Linux operating system. This simple-to-use Ubuntu 7.10 Linux-based system uses the Enlightenment E17 desktop interface with pre-setup Google applications for perhaps the easiest to use Linux desktop experience ever. Its ease of use, combined with its Google integration, has made it extremely popular in almost no time at all.
