New XML TV Listing Solutions for Freeware PVR Applications Become Available

As many of you have probably already heard, Tribune Media discontinued their free Zap2it Labs XML TV listing service that powered electronic programming guides (EPG) for many of the popular freeware PVR applications like MythTV, GP-PVR, Media Portal, and others. But don’t fret. It appears that two alternative pay-for solutions from Schedules Direct and CTpvr will be jumping in to fill the niche (via TV Squad).

Pricing Models:

Schedules Direct

  • 3 months for $15 (company plans to offer a $20-30 per year plan in the near future)

CTpvr

  • $3.50 month
  • $30 flat for a year of service

Aside: This appears to be an excellent opportunity for Google to step in and provide a much needed free service to the community. If not Google, why not Yahoo? They already have the Yahoo! TV infrastructure in place. Sounds like a good consumer relations move to me.
