Eye-Fi Wireless SD Memory Card to Debut This Fall

eye-fi logoI’ve got to tell ya. If the Eye-Fi Wi-Fi capable SD memory card is real, I’m picking it up on day one. According to reports on the net (via jkOnTheRun) and the Eye-Fi website, Eye-Fi is capable of transferring photos from your digital camera to a networked PC or to your favorite photo sharing site (partnerships are in the works). It’s unclear how the card is able to do this (Will it require special software on your PC to give it WPA permission on your home network? How will it login to your online accounts?), as well as, how you’re supposed to charge its integrated battery. Nonetheless, the $100 (est.) card, predicted to offer 2GB of storage, will be a bit of a superstar at launch and a godsend to those who dread the whole upload-and-post process of sharing your photos online via PC.

Message to Eye-Fi: Think there’s room for GPS on your card? It would be nice to have the card be smart in enough to add geo-location data to each saved photo at the time it’s taken. Just a thought.

I have been a beta tester for one of these for almost a year now. I have been using a 512mb one but supposedly will get the 2gb one whenever it comes out as a perk for being a beta tester. I can tell you it works wonderfully with every camera I have tried it with and the only downside is the battery usage. It cuts the camera battery in half. You have to load a program onto your computer to configure the wifi access points that you are going to use but once it is configured, the card communicates directly with the router or access point. No computer needs to be on. I have used it with both Flickr and Picasa and it immediately uploads the pictures as you take them. If you turn the camera off or go out of wifi range, it remembers which pictures have not been uploaded yet and resumes where it left off when you turn the camera back on or get back into range. Really a nice piece of hardware if you take a lot of pictures.
