Video: Automated Gun Turret Home Defense System

vcrib usb gun turretLast night I got an interesting email from the creator of the “vCrib” open source, home automation project. In it, he described how he managed to setup a fully mechanized, mouse-controlled USB BB gun turret, equipped with a webcam, that you can use to hold off (in theory) a home intruder while you wait for the police to arrive. Below is the video of his new creation in action. No word if we’ll be seeing this “add-on” supported in the next point release of vCrib.

My 2-cents: I think just shouting at (or taunting) the intruder from different speakers in the home would probably scare him off. Nonetheless, a show of lethal force could be pretty intimidating. What ever happened to having a good guard dog patrolling the premises?
