Kaleidescape DVD CCA Ruling May Postpone AACS Final Spec. and Managed Copy
According to the EETimes, after the Kaleidescape ruling (press release), movies studios are now a bit “skittish” on the implementation of “managed copy” (a process that allows PC owners to store/playback/stream copies of purchased movie discs to/from their hard drive) into the final specification of Advanced Access Content System (AACS). Alfred Perry, vice president of business and legal affairs for Paramount Pictures and board member of DVD CCA, stated: “The economics of the managed copy model are still being greatly debated.” FYI, the final AACS specification is already a year overdue, but the association behind AACS tells EETimes that they hope to have something concrete by year-end. Until then, non-AACS affiliated software developers have already hacked out solutions for HD DVD and Blu-ray movie disc owners to make their own unconditional managed copies (search).
