HP z500 Series Digital Entertainment Center PCs, R.I.P.

If you haven’t heard already, HP is dropping their set-top Windows Media Center Edition (MCE) PC lineup (aka Digital Entertainment Center). I know… I can’t believe it either. According to CE Pro, HP has decided to focus on developing and marketing their MediaSmart brand of TVs to work with Windows Media Connect-enabled (partial UPnP support) PCs – from any vendor – as a media extender device. Doug Robert, HP Channel Development Manager, states: “This not a statement about Media Center PCs. It doesn’t mean Media Center isn’t going to be successful. It’s just that we’re discontinuing development. […] Even at big companies, there are resource constraints.”
