microsoft windows mobile iphone knock-offNow here’s an entertaining video demo for us geeks! I just love the presenter’s unabashed use of Steve Jobs-style terminology and presentation to showcase this Windows Mobile iPhone mod (via Gizmodo). Basically, after seeing this, there’s really no reason to upgrade to the iPhone for the eye-candy if you’re a longtime Windows Mobile user (bonus: free Skype calling integration – a feature most likely never to be included in the iPhone). PVRblog: Slingbox Video Recording on a Mac

By Alexander Grundner | February 26th, 2007

slingplayer mac tivoOriginally, the how-to at PVRblog was geared to show how one can capture TiVo Series3 recordings on Mac since no software officially exists that allows users to transfer recordings off this particular device. But Matt Haughey’s suggestion, to use a screen capture (with audio recording) application like Snapz Pro X for OS X, looks like a workable solution for capturing video via Slingbox’s PC software, SlingPlayer (sample video). However, Matt warns: “This method isn’t useful for long captures, since the filesize of the video capture get really big really fast, but for grabbing a minute or two here to demonstrate a point or share a moment, it works great.”

microsoft windows vista upgrade advisor screenshotTom’s Hardware takes an in-depth look at what you need to get your Windows XP box ready for running Vista with all its bells, whistles, and capabilities (lots of good advice). But one of the more interesting tools suggested is an application, put out by Microsoft, called Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor which will analyze your current system’s hardware and visually tell you which components (i.e. CPU, graphics card, etc.) passed or failed. Additionally, Tom’s Hardware takes you through the process with a screenshot tour of what both Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and Windows Vista Experience Index (Vista’s built-in benchmark tool) is like and how to interpret the data.

Zune Music Now PlaysForSure Compatible?

zune to zen transfer screenshot

Here’s an interesting development. It turns out Zune Marketplace DRM-wrapped music files aren’t limited to being played back on the Zune music player, they’re also “unofficially” supported on some PlaysForSure devices. A detailed thread is available at Zunerama (via Cruchgear), but the gist of it is that a member (actually a member’s 13 year old daughter) figured out that music downloaded using her Zune Pass could be transferred to the Creative ZEN and played back without a problem. Note: At this time it isn’t clear if the ZEN player will actually respect the 15 day trial expiration on the music, or if it will allow one to keep the music indefinitely.
