Rumor: Windows Home Server Addition to Be Unveiled at CES 2007

philips lx1000A “source” close to ZDNet blogger/analyst Mary Jo Foley claims Microsoft is getting set to unveil Windows Home Server Addition at CES 2007 (via DMT). Supposedly Microsoft has been contemplating jumping into the home server market since 2005 and has been quietly working on a project code-named “Quattro” based on Windows Server (others say Windows Vista). At this point it’s unclear which direction the company is going to take, so it’s really not worth posting further speculation from random people. Let’s just wait and see what happens, if anything. What are your thoughts? Good move or not?

UPDATE 1/8/07: The rumor is true! Read about it here and here.

  • The big problem for home users is the risk of loss of all their data. If the Home Server solves the backup issue from the individual machines, How do you then make sure that the backup server is backed up?
  • Crashless
The only way I see people actually buying something like this is if it's a very inexpensive (under $400) very expandable (4+ easy to install HDD bays) very energy efficient appliance.

I've often considered a mac mini for this very purpose, but having to invest in external storage exclusively always turns me off.

So maybe just a little, quiet, server that may or may not have a fully functional OS might be a half-decent idea.
