Video: Fedora Core Linux Running on PlayStation 3

sony ps3 other os optionAs many of you know, Yellow Dog Linux has a Sony sanctioned Desktop Linux distribution ready to go that takes advantage of the PS3′s powerful 3.2Ghz Cell processor (specs | hardware summary) and integrated hardware. Now, it looks like it’s not that difficult to get other distros, like Red Hat’s sponsored Fedora Core (PowerPC Edition), to play nice as well. In the following video you’ll see how easy it is to jump from the PlayStation game environment to the PC environment (aka “Other OS”) – similar to a dual-boot PC setup. Could the PlayStation 3 be your next desktop PC replacement?

* Tip: The PS3 offers HDMI video out, so you’ll need to pick up a HDMI to DVI Cable if you’re thinking of connecting the console to your flatscreen computer montior.

Comments: There shouldn’t be a reason to have to log in as root or initiate X as the video shows. It looks like the Fedora configuration needs some tweaking. This is where Yellow Dog Linux probably has the advantage at this point for general PC users. However, knowing the pace of distro development, I wouldn’t surprised to see versions specifically optimized to run on this console (FYI, I hear Nintendo’s Wii runs Linux, too).
