Rip Blu-ray Movie Discs with Your New PlayStation 3

Now that the PS3 can run full-blown Linux OS distributions like Yellow Dog Linux, Fedora Core (video), and others, users have found that ripping an exact copy of a Blu-ray movie (as well as PS3 games) is as easy as typing in the following command in the Terminal to create an ISO image: dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/blu-raymovie.iso. Of course, once you’ve created the file, you can then burn a Blu-ray disc with the ISO image if you have an external Blu-ray burner handy or – most likely the case – just play the movie back from its hard drive or attached storage (via Gizmodo, PS3NEWS). Ahhhh, the beauty of having full access to hack your system (more details on the dd command). MORE »

Move by Chinese CE Manufactures Could Give EVD the Advantage over Blu-ray & HD DVD
China Daily reports: “Nearly 20 leading Chinese manufacturers will stop making DVD players from 2008, replacing them with EVD (Enhanced Versatile Disc) players, the next-generation players based on a Chinese home-grown standard.” For those unfamiliar with EVD, EVD is a red laser optical storage medium in the same physical dimensions as DVD discs and uses the same UDF file system. The main difference between DVD and EVD is that EVD leverages the more efficient VP5 and VP6 video codecs from On2 Technology – as opposed to MPEG-2 – that enables the disc to store HD resolution content and played back on a device for under $100. In addition, EVD does not require licensing from either Macrovision (CSS) or MPEG-2, which typically cost manufactures $13-$20 per video player. This point in particular is probably the biggest reason for the switch. MORE »
