Sony to Release New LFB-20 (Wireless) & LFB-10 (Wired) LocationFree TV Base Stations

sony lf b20What’s going on here? Looks like Sony is trying to resurrect its image and prowess with a sweetly designed (love the Sony aesthetic) placeshifting gizmo that will be able to stream live video across a home network at 300Kbps in H.264 AVC to a PC, Mac, PSP, and Sony’s LocationFree LCD TV tablets. There’s also talk that Sony is working on a Windows Mobile software client for PDAs and smartphones and may later release a client for the PlayStation 3 as well. Prices start at $200 and appears to include one LocationFree TV receiver box (originally a $230 add-on). Expected launch: October 2006. More info at CNET Alpha Blog (via Gizmodo).

Random Musing:
Too bad Sony or Slingmedia haven’t figured out a way for people to view content on their portables and remote computers through a simple browser interface without the need of a software client. It seems like it would be possible to login to the base station (at least in Sony’s case) remotely and have it serve up a customized page that would embed a video player and controller (maybe with Java?). Seems like a great competitive advantage that neither of these two companies have tapped into.
