Getting HD Support in Your Current or Next Do-It-Yourself PC

cyberlink bd hd advisor screenshotLast week Cyberlink announced two new tools for checking the compatibility of your PC’s hardware for HD DVD or Blu-ray disc playback called the CyberLink BD / HD Advisor for PowerDVD. The Advisor goes through each of the critical components – processor, system memory, OS, graphics card, drivers, AACS compatible HD DVD / Blu-ray disc drive, software player, HDCP compliant display – and then it either gives you a red light, yellow light, or green light (literally) if everything is up to snuff. Originally I thought the tool was designed for OEMs, but it appears that anyone can download it since the guys at HD Beat where able to test their gear (see screenshot). Richard Lawler at HD Beat recommends, if people are serious about getting HD support on their PC, to look into NVIDIA’s new PureVideo HD solution for HDCP-compliant graphics cards that will provide onboard hardware acceleration for decoding high-definition movies with minimal CPU utilization. Sounds like good advice, but with all the hardware requirments that need to be fulfilled you might be better off just buying a new PC.
