Winbook Jiv Mini MCE PC Reviewed
For anyone that regularly reads PC Magazine, the term “perfect” rarely comes up and deservedly so. So few products ever hit the goldmine of pricing, styling and functionality. That’s why, when reading the review of the Winbook Jiv Mini MCE PC I was taken aback by the statement that the Jiv Mini is “the perfect home-theater PC.” Yes – perfect. And from a company whose name is not Sony, HP or Dell no less.
So, what makes the Jiv Mini “perfect” as a home-theater PC? Well, for one, at $1200 dollars, it won’t break the bank. The Intel Core Duo processor consumes less power while letting the system multi-task well. The smallish system is also one of the first mini-PCs to integrate a TV tuner into the box without having to use an external USB version. Also, hooking up the Jiv Mini to your TV is ultra-convenient with a DVI port for digital TVs and Component Video, S-Video and even Composite Video ports for good ole analog sets. The built-in IR receiver eliminates the clutter a USB IR receiver brings and the built-in support for 802.11 a/g and Bluetooth networking are nice.
Apparently, perfect does still come with some caveats (the “perfect” system got a 4.5 out of 5). For one, the integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics are good enough for television and movie viewing, but pathetic for gaming. Also, because of the size of the system, you’re limited to a 100GB laptop-class hard drive. Finally and oddly, PC Mag criticized the $99 optional MCE remote keyboard for it’s poor pointing stick. It says alot about the Jiv Mini that PC Mag had to criticize the included keyboard to find anything not to like about it.
Overall, it looks like the Jiv Mini is firing on all cylinders where MCE systems are concerned. If you’re looking for a small, stylish and affordable MCE for the living room, the Winbook Jiv Mini should be on your short list.
