Rumor: Microsoft’s iPod Killer to Have Wireless Capabilities

microsoft ipod proA source close to Microsoft told Reuters that the company’s upcoming portable media player, which will try to unseat the reigning champion, the Apple iPod, will have wireless capabilities built-in so that users can instantly download music and videos at whim from partner content providers online (I’m guessing through wireless kiosks as well). Strange we haven’t heard any rumblings from content providers so far, but wireless downloads are definitely the next logical step (just ask the cellular carriers) that will fulfill the dream companies like Microsoft and Intel have been promising. I wonder if we’ll start seeing content providers offering discounted hotspot plans through partner companies?

UPDATE: Engadget adds: “To attract current iPod users Microsoft is going to let you download for free any songs you’ve already bought from the iTunes Music Store. They’ll actually scan iTunes for purchased tracks and then automatically add those to your account. Microsoft will still have to pay the rights-holders for the songs, but they believe it’ll be worth it to acquire converts to their new player.”
